How Gemma Arterton became a Sex Symbol with Quantum of Solace

I thoroughly enjoyed posting the lingerie scenes found in James Bond movies. It is surprising that most of them are from the modern Bond-era: Pierce Brosnan & Daniel Craig with GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies & Spectre. However I want to continue featuring more bond-girls and so here is Gemma Arterton who arguably made her career breakthrough with her role as Strawberry Fields. A role that divided fans, as did the movie overall.

Bond Girl in Quantum of Solace (2008)

Gemma Arterton’s major breakthrough came when she was cast as the “Bond Girl” Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace (2008), Daniel Craig’s second outing as James Bond. Though her screen time was relatively brief, Arterton’s performance left a lasting impression. Her character, a British intelligence agent, meets a tragic fate in a scene reminiscent of the iconic gold-covered body of Jill Masterson from Goldfinger (1964).

Arterton’s role in Quantum of Solace was significant not only for launching her international career but also for introducing her to a global audience. As Strawberry Fields, she portrayed a more grounded, less overtly glamorous Bond Girl compared to her predecessors. Though some critics found the role underdeveloped, Arterton herself has reflected on the experience with mixed feelings, stating in interviews that, while it helped her career, she has since become more discerning about the roles she takes.

Iconic GQ Photoshoot

Following the success of Quantum of Solace, Arterton graced the cover of GQ magazine in a memorable 2009 photoshoot that further fueled her status as a rising star and a sex symbol. The shoot showcased Arterton’s undeniable allure and elegance, cementing her as a fashion icon. This marked a transitional moment for her public image, bridging the gap between her early days as an actress and her move into higher-profile, more challenging roles.

Despite the attention the GQ shoot garnered, Arterton has often expressed that she wants her work to be judged by her talent and dedication to her craft rather than by superficial standards. In later years, she became vocal about her desire to take on more meaningful and diverse roles, turning away from projects that did not resonate with her evolving personal and professional values.

So there you have, an actress that has managed to carve out a path through some troubled waters, not unlike Tom Hardy (just an example)
