After Alicia Vikander’s nude body in the last post I thought it was time for something a little lighter. Evolution a was 2001 movie starring David Duchovny (hot from The X-Files) and Julianne Moore (Hannibal). It is basically a weird sci-fi comedy with a hint of The X-Files. The movie is passably watchable, but one scene involving Julianne Moore is a little weird. Her character Dr. Allison Reed trips while introducing herself during a field meeting with a military commander. Duchovny’s character Dr Ira Kane and his colleague Harry Block obtain a good look of Allison’s garter legs as she tries to pull herself up. Ira responds to the situation with a throwaway line, “A garter-belt, at a day function?”. Nothing else is made of it and sadly we never see the stockings or garter tabs again. It is a arguably a weird shot, whose purpose it seems is to introduce Allison as not only a tough and professional researcher but one who is also not afraid to show her feminine side. And that she certainly did.
Duchovny’s line seem to indicate wearing garter belts was unusual for a woman in 2001. It probably was, declining rapidly in the 80s and 90s in favor of hold-up and tights. But you could argue 2001 is the back-end of the 90s and with Allison’s character being 40-something she would have experience wearing them. I like how her character is not embarrassed of having accidentally exposed her stocking tops and garter tabs, it puts her on equal footing with Ira.
Julianne Moore has had a long and established career. Her breakthrough came with the movie Short Cuts in 1993 directed by Robert Altman during which her nude bush was full on display when she argued with her husband. The number of productions she has been in is staggering, from The Fugitive (year before Short Cuts), to Jurassic Park: The Lost World and of course Hannibal. This role saw her replace Jodie Foster as agent Clarice Starling. While the movie is pretty good the book is better at establishing at Clarice’s latent desire for glamour. It is a character trait Dr. Lecter readily senses. In the movie we do see Clarice wear a skirt to an FBI meeting in which her recent violent shootout is discussed. It is a sensible thing to wear for a woman who suddenly has to use her feminine side to score points. Paul Krendler, her arch-nemesis makes the mistake of staring at her legs for too long, but that only proves she was right in putting on this mid-thigh skirt. Later on in the movie Lecter captures Clarice and during the dinner party in which he consumes Krendler’s brain he makes Clarice wear a very revealing black cocktail dress. Everybody who has seen the movie agrees Lecter has style, even if he is a horrible cannibal. I have added pictures of Clarice from Hannibal below as well as a few other images of the actress.
